NaNoWriMo

July Outlined.

July 29, 2017 By Jenai Leave a Comment

No really, I’ve spent July outlining the second half of the first Dragon Relic book. NaNoWriMo now allows us to set time goals and shift those goals right up to the end (for Camps, not the November event).

Via outline and sketches, I introduced of a new secondary main character, who will not only be crucial to this story arc, but also star in another splinter series that I’m devising. The best part? The character, both in concept and name, spawned from a client’s typo. This is a longer story best saved for another post. In short, I loved the typo-name so much, I’m immortalizing it in Dragon Relic. These humorous tidbits can sometimes lend much-needed fuel to a limping project, and this was no exception.

My pace wasn’t stellar, and many days coasted by without a thought toward Dragon Relic. However, nothing came to an utter halt, and the overall story moved in a forward direction. To this, I say and feel, “Yay!”

Goal #1… Met!

May is Looming & WriteTrack

April 29, 2017 By Jenai Leave a Comment

Tomorrow marks the final day of Camp NaNoWriMo. The good news: I’m on-track to meet my word count goal of 40,000 words. However, Dragon Relic will be only about half-complete and, of course, unedited. Granted, I designed my word count goal to be realistic and, therefore, I knew I wouldn’t finished the novel by April 30th.

I’ve been facing a problem though. The visual goal tracker that NaNoWriMo uses is really helpful for me. I need it. Without that graph I don’t write as efficiently. Perhaps one day I will, but I’m not there yet.

Today I realized how soon I’d be without this precious writing aid… and I panicked.

Fortunately, after a little scouting around on the internet, I found WriteTrack by David S. Gale. It is free. It is also based on NaNoWriMo’s tracker! In other words, it’s a perfect match for me, and I’m no longer panicking.

I’ve already set May’s word count goal. It’s only 20,000 words for now because I need to lighten the pace for a while. I’m thrilled because this means that, come Monday, I will continue writing as usual with no disruptions!

Catch-Up Time!

April 22, 2017 By Jenai Leave a Comment

Alas, I’ve fallen behind in my writing. I’m only lagging by about one day, and I do expect to catch up today. However, any slowness is a bit discouraging!

Because of this, I’m keeping this post very brief. It’s mostly just me checking in with everyone, and saying that I’m still here!

Also… Happy Earth Day!

Here’s the Moon.

Attempted Derailment

The past two of days have been filled with both work and health “blahs”, both of which have slowed my writing a bit. Not entirely, just a bit. I’m not at all discouraged and still pacing ahead of schedule.

So here is a marvelous dragon painted by Frank Moser.

Back to writing I go!

A Nod to Dreaming

Selene and Endymion in “The Vision of Endymion” by Edward John Poynter, 1902

The last scene I wrote in Dragon Relic depicted a nightmare I had, numerous times, when I was about four or five years old. To have this dream, that has haunted me for decades, suddenly find its home in my book, felt surreal. The experience was more surreal than the dream itself. It required no force and minimal alteration; the dream simply belongs in this book.

This isn’t the only dream that has influenced Dragon Relic. A story about dragons had been on my mind for a few months, particularly because I knew my children might enjoy it. Then, one morning, I woke up from a nightmare that starred a terrifying dragon. Everything about it… how it opened, the setting, and the cliffhanger… was perfect for the beginning of a book.
